Potential for Biofuels

- Image via Wikipedia
One source of potential energy are the biofuels that are rotting in our landfills. Our food scraps, grass clippings, wood pulp, old building materials, and even our animal waste could be converted into energy that is quite a bit cleaner thna oil, coal, and gas.
One of the biggest players in biofuels is ethanol. This eco-friendly fuel is created by filtering the starch out of corn. Rather than breaking apart apart carbon atoms in coal and oil, biofuels operate by breaking apart the carbon stored in plant and animal matter.
The golden stalks of corn in America’s midwest are doing more than feeding cattle. They are also powering many fuel tanks too. In 2006, 4.86 gallons of ethanol were produced from corn. Of course, the expansion of corn based ethanol has created some increases in food prices, but new biofuel processes such as cellulosic-0based ethonal would employ grasses or agricultural waster and not corn.
It is estimated that ethanol could replace up to 30 – 50% of petroleum used in the United States. In the future, we can look toward growing corn and grasses for fuel along with using agricultural and municipal waste.
After commercial operations are operating, cellulosic ethanol plants will feature a huge improvement over fossil fuels. As oil costs keep rising, cellulosic ethanol is projected to drop to as low as 60 cents per gallon in less than a decade. This is a big drop compared with $117 per barrel for oil as of April 2008. The overall success of biofuels depends on research development and subsidies to build commercial plants, and to begin using homegrown resources rather than importing cost oil.
